It was a refreshing process, and we feel that much of that energy is transparent in the recording. We are incredibly proud of this record. [1] He also stated that the album is more of a pop album because he felt that it needed to be written. He went on to say, That being said, our next album will definitely be a rock record. Maybe even punk rock, who knows? [2] Release[edit] On May 17, 2013, Relient K posted the album art, saying that the album would officially be released on July 2, 2013.[3] It was released on July 2, 2013.[4][5] The name of the album comes from the title track Collapsible Lung, which is the last song on the record. The band played various songs from the album live, prior to its release, such as When You Were My Baby, Boomerang, PTL, and Sweeter. The band also mentioned the song called Lost Boy while they were in the studio in late 2012, not yet known to its future listeners. Don't Blink was released with a lyric video on You Tube.[6] Critical reception[edit] Collapsible Lung garnered mixed reception from music critics. At Louder Than the Music, Jono Davies called it an album of such great quality that, he wrote, has a fresh feel to it with a modern rock sound. He went on to say that the band have moved away from just writing energetic pop/punk songs, and instead have written an album that is creative, solid and mature, but at the same time not losing their.
Relient K - Collapsible Lung Released: July 2, 2013 Mono Vs Stereo Maybe we should’ve expected this. Relient K’s last album, 2009’s Forget And Not Slow Down, was a brilliantly brutal breakup record penned by Matt Thiessen that sounded like what we imagine Ben Gibbard would create if he fronted a pop-punk band. Unfortunately, the album wasn’t a commercial success like previous RK records have been. Now we’re left with Collapsible Lung, the dreadfully plastic yang to Forget’s emotional, powerful yin. Thiessen, an accomplished songwriter in his own right, recruited a number of big name co-writers for Collapsible Lung, resulting in songs that sound like poor facsimiles of Maroon 5 (“ Part- Time Lover” Bruno Mars (“ Can’t Complain”) and Neon Trees (“ Gloria”). The album turns itself around temporarily with the closing soft ballad “ Sweeter” and the midtempo, wistful title track, each carrying more emotional resonance than anything else preceding them. Unfortunately, it's too little, too late. Oh, and that bonus track featuring Owl City? It’s called “ That’s My Jam,” and it’s one of the schmaltziest adult-contemporary pop songs we’ve ever heard and should be avoided at all costs.
Relient K is having an identity crisis. Every Christian kid has one. Gone are the power chords of their early work, the chamber flourishes of their late-career albums, and, perhaps most conspicuously, all but one reference to their Christian faith. Matt Thiessen and company, long beloved for their wide-eyed innocence and mischievous sense of humor, are barely recognizable on Collapsible Lung, a record frontloaded with generic dance-pop tracks co-penned by associates of Lady Gaga, Cee Lo Green, and Bruno Mars. Call it Switchfoot Syndrome: as commercial viability rises, references to faith are obfuscated, then excised completely. The men of Relient K have not completely forsaken their Savior on Collapsible Lung, but they’ve traded their trademark songs about faith’s joys and struggles for synth-heavy tracks about casual sex and barhopping. “ PTL”, for example, finds Thiessen channeling Michael Angelakos’ falsetto to lament a one-night stand. Meanwhile, the grating “ Lost Boy” collapses beneath the weight of its Maroon 5 influences. Side A’s saving grace is “ Can’t Complain”, an upbeat ditty that transcends its Self- Help 101 lyrics with a breezy, tropical vibe that feels like a Relient K song, even if it doesn’t sound like one. Side B fares much better thanks to “ Sweeter”, a twangy ballad with country leanings, and the title track, which finds Thiessen convalescing from the hedonism of that which came before. Like it or not, Relient K was always at its best when directing its gaze skyward. Past hits like “ Be My Escape” and “ Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” benefit from the band’s heartfelt, nuanced take on redemption and other matters of the soul. Collapsible Lung, however, is weighted down by a parade of faceless women, many of whom are reduced to mere sexual objects, resulting in a record that reeks of adolescent rebellion at best and pandering at worst. “ I hope I haven’t.
RELIEN YRICS Collapsible Lung Between the miles of open road I lost sight of what might matter the most I stumbled into the great unknown and found That time won’t slow down I’m getting by with my collapsible lung And it’s a good time 100% of the time And I’m like a ladder with a missing rung And it’s a slow climb headed back to the sky And I’m feelin' backwards when I’m trying the most And I hope haven’t heard the last words from the holy ghost Cause I think that I’m supposed to be Well on my way by now I'll do the twist with my replaceable hips And turn you right round Then dip you down to the ground And now I wanna grow old and rub your tired limbs And take it easy Until we wither away Until we wither away Between the miles of open road I lost sight of what might matter the most I stumbled into the great unknown and found That time can’t slow down To take a breath and then take it in To think of places I’ll go I haven’t been To pour my heart into everything I've found Time won’t slow down Feelin' backwards And I hope haven’t heard the last words No, no, no Cause I think that I’m supposed to be Well on my way-eh-eh! Eh eh! Wooo To pour my heart into everything I found Between the miles of open road I lost sight of what might matter the most I stumbled into the great unknown and found That time won’t slow down To take a breath and then take it in To think of places I’ll go I haven’t been Collapsible Lung (2013).
