“ THE BIRDS is coming!” to the TCM Classic Film Festival next April, along with star Tippi Hedren, Turner Classic Movies announced today. The still-gorgeous, 82-year-old actress and animal activist will be in person at the fourth annual TCMFF in Hollywood April 25-28  for a screening honoring the 50th anniversary of one of Hitchcock’s creepiest classics. Hedren also appeared at the 2012 Festival, and the interview she recorded with host Robert Osborne was featured in national, one-night-only screenings of THE BIRDS in September from TCM and Fathom Events. TCM also announced that acclaimed documentarian and cinematographer Albert Maysles will be on hand, along with rare theatrical screenings of two of his most-respected films: SALESMAN (1968 a “direct cinema” portrait of four Bible salesmen traveling across New England and Florida;  and GIMME SHELTER (1970 a harrowing look at the Rolling Stones’ 1969 tour and the concert at the Altamont Speedway in which an 18-year-old was murdered by a member of the Hell’s Angels. I hope that TCM will also add a screening of GREY GARDENS (1975 the touching and hilarious documentary about mother and daughter socialites living in a decaying mansion in the Hamptons. The TCM Classic Film Festival will also present the world premiere of a new restoration of King Vidor’s THE BIG PARADE (1925 a World War I drama starring John Gilbert as an American soldier and Renée Adorée as the French farm girl he falls in love with. ( For the record, the ending of this films is a killer tear jerker. Bring tissues if you go.) The screening will feature a pre-recorded original score by acclaimed silent film composer Carl Davis and further emphasizes the TCMFF’s commitment to silent cinema. ( Some of my most memorable moviegoing experiences of all time have been silent film screenings at the TCM FIlm Fest, such as the closing night presentation of.
