I think that some explanation would be in order of this scandalous picture which appeared on the web site front page! On the 26th August 2004 a rather interesting opportunity came my way when I was asked to make some recordings on the Welsh Highland Railway to be used with the Microsoft Train Simulator. Although this would also mean recording some diesels, as it was in a good cause I was only too happy to agree! In due course the WHR route for MSTS will be on sale with profits going to the railway. Information about this and Spooners TS, the group producing the route can be found at the bottom of this page. I was particularly interested in helping because, having tried over the years since the railway reopened to get recordings of the Garratts and aside from one lineside recording which has already appeared in these pages (see the this page generally been unsuccessful, particularly with on-train recordings so I was most interested to see if the two NGG16 Garratt locos could be persuaded to make some noise! After spending the morning at Dinas making recordings of various diesels moving about the yard and some static recordings of the Garratts on shed the main attempt to record was to be on the last two trains from Caernarfon up to Dinas, these being the quietest trains (from the passenger numbers point of view). On the first of these with No. 143 on 6 bogies plus the bike wagon, after having a word with the crew to explain what we were doing and what was required, I settled back in the first coach not really knowing what to expect but, soon after departure it became apparent that Garratts could make some noise when worked hard. With a relatively light train these locos accelerate to line speed quite rapidly and the exhaust soon becomes a roar. Probably the best bit was the start from the rarely used halt at Bontnewydd, the stop being put in especially for.

A Chance To Drive A Talyllyn Train Whenever You Like! Well, now you can by obtaining a copy of Steve Pontin's Talyllyn Railway Route for Microsoft Train Simulator! ( To go straight to details on how to order, click here.) This route, now at version 2, is a complete rebuild of an earlier version and has been improved to provide an enhanced view of the Talyllyn Railway world The route has been created using real world terrain landscape modelling and the track laid to real Talyllyn profiles so that you can now experience the skills required by the Talyllyn drivers in running the trains up and down the line. Almost all the scenery objects have been created and textured using photo-realistic techniques taken from hundreds of digital photographs of the railway. This adds to the realism and atmosphere of the line. We hope that you find the features enhance your enjoyment of running trains along this most famous of Welsh Narrow Railways - One of the Great Little Trains of Wales. Some users have reported error messages about missing texture files when starting the Talyllyn route - a patch to resolve this issue is available from the author's web site. Brief Description of the Route The route starts at Tywyn Wharf and depicts the station buildings and surrounding features including the new Wharf Station building extension due to open in Spring 2005. Leaving the station the line runs up the deep cutting, emerging into the highly detailed Pendre complex. All the prototypical buildings and trackwork are present and the level crossing at Pendre is fully working, opening as the train approaches and stopping the moving cars along the roadway. Continuing up the line, passing the roving sheep along the lineside, the route leads into Rhydyronen station with its sheltered platform and daffodil field before passing the caravan holiday site at Tynllwyn. Brynglas is soon reached with its.
